Mental illness is one of the leading causes of work disability (70 per cent are "total disability" costs). It manifests itself in the workplace in various ways, including mood disorders (anxiety), harassment, and violence. Costs related to health care and lost productivity at work add up to a staggering $51 billion per year (Health Statistics Canada, 2008). This underlines the importance of seriously addressing psychological health at work in order to minimize its impact on employees, their work environment, and their productivity.

Y2CP psychologists or neuropsychologists are often contracted by insurers, lawyers, and employers to conduct an IME, which is a one-time Independent Medical Examination or Medical-Legal Assessment. It is usually conducted to determine the cause and extent of an individual's injury when liability is an issue. Our professionals provide an objective, third-party assessment of the examinee's psychological and/or neuropsychological status and are not influenced by the source that refers the examination or by the pre-existing doctor-patient relationship.
In cases where there are multiple or conflicting professional opinions, Y2CP psychologists and neuropsychologists conduct peer file reviews in the course of which they examine all available records and respond to specific questions posed to them on issues such as causation, impairment or appropriateness of care. Demand for such reviews often arises in cases of automobile accidents, workers' compensation, disability, and one's return to work. Our final reports are unbiased and are based on objective data.
A Minor or Catastrophic Assessment determines the extent and permanence of a person's injuries and is used, for example, in the case of an automobile accident victim. The assessments evaluate the victim's psychological and/or neuropsychological state to determine if the person is injured and if these injuries impact their daily living and ability to work. Y2CP psychologists and neuropsychologists are trained in the use of the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment and in catastrophic impairment assessments.
A Return to Work or a Fitness for Duty Risk Assessment is an objective and comprehensive evaluation of an examinee's psychological condition. Our Y2CP psychologists and neuropsychologists particularly focus on determining the level of risk to the worker's and coworkers' safety associated with the individual remaining in or returning to the work environment. To that end, such Workplace Risk Assessments often also involve interviews with members of the examinee's family, workplace supervisors, and colleagues.

Psychological assessments are comprehensive evaluation methods used to diagnose psychological problems and disorders. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders–V (DSM–V) has long been considered the Bible of diagnosis and treatment. Proper diagnosis is often the foundation of treatment decisions made by mental health practitioners.

Neuropsychological assessments should be considered when it is important to evaluate learning disabilities and cognitive dysfunction — whatever the age. When there is a disturbance in the normal pattern of brain-behaviour relationship, deficits in learning, behaviour, mood, and development are created. These may be related to injury, illness, or genetic coding. Neuropsychological assessments provide the means to understand these problems.
