Approaches

There are different schools of thought in the field of psychology, leading to a variety of psychotherapeutic approaches that differ from one another in terms of the theories on which they are based, the way in which they conceptualize psychological problems, the techniques used and their view of the therapeutic relationship. Although many different approaches exist, the most commonly encountered are: cognitive-behavioural; existential-humanistic; psychodynamic-analytical and systemic-interactional. Many psychologists do not limit themselves to only one approach in their practice. In fact, many psychologists use ideas and techniques from a variety of approaches, depending on the problems that client present.

At Y2 Consulting Psychologists, the cognitive-behavioural approach is most commonly used with our clients. The cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is based on the principle that if maladaptive behaviour can be learned, it can also be unlearned. According to this school of thought, attitudes, habits and negative thoughts are learned responses and the best way to eliminate them is to learn new, more constructive ones. Emphasis is placed on the present, the here-and-now. During therapy, the psychologist will help his/her client to become aware of his/her own thoughts and beliefs, and to replace them with more realistic evaluations and judgements.

Thanks to our expert professionals, we can usually help you more efficiently and with fewer sessions than a counselor who has little experience with your problem, which can represent substantial savings.

Our fees for psychological services qualify for partial or total insurance coverage. Most insurance providers for Government departments/agencies cover up to 80% of psychological fees (up to $1000/yearly maximum per family member).

Our psychological services are available at a rate of $160.00 to $300.00 for each 55 minutes session, depending on the consulting professional, and are exempt from taxes.

Appointments/Cancellations

If you must cancel an appointment, we ask that you do so at least 24 hours ahead of time, either by calling the receptionist or leaving a message on our voicemail. Your cancellation notice allows us to respond to the needs of other clients.

Failure to cancel an appointment will result in an agreed upon charge of up to 100% of the session. (For coaching and counseling services different cancellation policies may have been agreed upon with the client/client organization – see signed agreement for details as applicable).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral from my doctor to see a psychologist?

Yes and no. In certain cases, to ensure coverage, your medical insurance may require a referral from a doctor.

However, if this is not a requirement of your medical insurance or if you don't have medical insurance, you are free to self-refer to psychologists. To do so, you can call our main office (819.777.7744 ext 0) or fill out a request for services directly online.

How do I ensure I get a mental health specialist who is the right fit for me?

We know how important it is for you to feel comfortable with your psychologist, psychotherapist or neuropsychologist.

And at Y2CP we match your needs to the professional (from our extensive team of psychologists) who will be the right fit and who will develop a strong working relationship with you. With over 30 mental health specialists, we are able to find the psychologist that has the expertise to help you with your specific needs. We also have three convenient offices (two in Hull, and one in Aylmer).

As a client receiving psychological services is there follow-up with the doctor who referred me?

I've been referred to Y2CP for psychological services by my family doctor. What type of follow-up does Y2CP do with him or her and how?

Should your doctor request the results of your psychological or neuropsychological evaluations for his/her records, Y2CP, with your consent, will send them a simplified assessment report with our psychological or neuropsychological diagnosis, and our treatment recommendations and plan.

And we ensure that report turnaround times are quick and efficient.

Once treatment is completed, we can also provide your doctor with a termination report for his/her files.

Does my child/adolescent need the help of a psychologist?

It's difficult to know when to seek professional help for a child/adolescent. Often times parents do so when they are difficult to manage or when there is discord within the family. At other times, parents may consult a psychologist if their child/adolescent:

  • is experiencing learning difficulties;
  • is having problems at school;
  • is maturing slower than others;
  • is sleeping poorly (or bed wetting);
  • is having difficulty paying attention or is overly active;
  • is depressed or anxious;
  • is aggressive with other children/adolescents;
  • is having difficulty with drugs/alcohol or has an eating disorder;
  • is having difficulties following a divorce or separation (of parents).

How would a psychologist help my child/adolescent?

At Y2CP we begin by talking to parents to help them pinpoint the exact problem(s) or issue(s) related to their child/adolescent. As appropriate, the child will be included in this session by the psychologist. Follow-up sessions may involve the child alone or involve the child and family members.

In addition to assessments and tests that the psychologist will conduct, he/she may wish to collect information from others during the treatment period (e.g. teachers, the family doctor, and others who know your child/adolescent). However, this is only done with the consent of the parents.
